Senate passes healthcare reform bill in party-line vote.
On Thursday morning, the Senate approved a healthcare reform bill on a 60-39 party-line vote. According to the Washington Post (12/25, Murray, Montgomery) "senators on both sides of the aisle" called it "a historic milestone." The bill "would transform the nation's healthcare system by requiring people without insurance to obtain coverage and protecting those who have it from the most unpopular private insurance practices," according to the Post. However, the "toughest stretch may lie ahead as House and Senate leaders attempt to fuse their separate bills with their different approaches to providing coverage and paying for it. And Republicans vow to make the process as difficult as possible, in hopes of stopping the legislation.""The 60-to-39 party-line vote, starting at 7:05 a.m. on the 25th straight day of debate on the legislation, brings Democrats closer to a goal they have pursued for decades and brings President Obama a step closer to success in his signature domestic initiative," the New York Times (12/25, A1, Pear) reported in a front-page story, also calling it a "milestone" should the bill become law. According to Congressional Budget Office estimates, "the bill would provide coverage to 31 million uninsured people, but still leave 23 million uninsured in 2019. One-third of those remaining uninsured would be illegal immigrants."
